" Praying the Devil Back to Hell" (Director Gini Reticker and Producer Abigail Disney's),is by far one of the best documentaries I have ever watched in my life. It narrates the story of the peaceful struggle of a group of Liberian women who under the leadership of Leymah Gbowee, rose up to peace and helped to bring the country's first female head of state, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, into power. Both of these women, along with Tawakkul Karman, received the Nobel Peace Prize of this year. The peaceful, and yet persistent and effective tactics of these women were very well demonstrated in the documentary.
Between 1989 and 2003, Liberia, collapsed into a civil war between the government of the despotic Charles Taylor and a coalition of warlords. The result of this conflict was systematic and widespread heinous acts including conscription of young boys, raping of girls and women, and cutting off the hands and legs of the civilians. This documentary narrates how unarmed women, with their unique and peaceful tactics ( as Gbowee jokingly says with their white shirts), brought peace to Liberia. It all started with Leymah's dream : " I had a dream, and it was like a crazy dream... "
